Hawaiians once thought that whales were manifestations of Kanalao, God of the Sea, who led their Polynesian ancestors to Hawaii. No wonder they were filled with awe and wonder.

The humpback whale is magnificent! Between 40-50 feet long, it weighs up to 79,000 pounds, yet performs dazzling acrobatic leaps called “breaches,” as it swims through the ocean.

All summer long, the Gentle Giant feeds in the North Pacific, storing fat for its winter migration to tropical waters where it will mate and breed. The round trip journey is between 5,000-7,000 miles. En route, the humpback communicates with other whales by singing whale songs that haunt us with their eerie beauty.
